This video outlines how health reform helps people who are graduating college. Starting in 2014, health reform will require everyone to buy health insurance and provide tax subsidies to help people with qualifying low-incomes cover the cost of health insurance. Beginning in the Fall of 2010, young people under the age of 26 will have the option to stay on their parents health insurance plan, or to take advantage of new consumer protections in the non-group / individual health insurance market. Although these types of plans already exist in many states, starting in 2014, young people will also have the option to buy additional new, low-cost, catastrophic health coverage with high deductibles to cover the cost of a major illness or injury.

I am looking at joining up for private health insurance to cover my husband and myself as well as our 2 kids aged 12 and 10. With so many policies and companies to chose from and all the jargon they use, it is making this difficult. We need basic hospital cover and with the kids full dental cover is a must.my husband has had heart problems in the past so need to be covered for this as well. Not wanting all the bells and whistles, just the best deal for young familes.

I’m 50 and have had private health insurance for the last 12 years.
The one and only time I used my hospital cover was about a year ago when I had an endoscopy procedure performed on me at the Mount Hospital in Perth. My first time in hospital.
What amazed me is that Medicare paid the bulk of the total bill with HIFof WA paying a relatively small portion. I paid around 0 from my own pocket.
Which begs a question. Why do I bother with private health cover when Medicare pick-up most of the total bill anyway!
Any thoughts? Am I missing something?

I asked a similar more detailed question earlier with no answers, so I thought to try again.
what are the benefits of Basic private health insurance? I know it depends on your policy, but can someone please tell me if it’s worth investing in, or just sticking with the public system.
( I live in Australia, and while we do get treated without insurance it often takes longer, the system is ridiculously flawed)

You need MBF because of Crunch Time! Because if you don’t have private hospital cover by June 30, the Government’s Lifetime Health Cover Loading could hit hard.
